01 — Context

Resource guide workbook design for veterans

We had already designed the Deloitte LinkedIn Best Practices for Veterans booklet, a guide supporting a career program for veterans transitioning into civilian work. Deloitte then asked for a coordinating piece: a printable resource guide that would be handed out alongside the booklet. The brief called for resource guide workbook design: something veterans would work through, not just read.

Where the first booklet explained best practice, this one had to be used. It functions as a workbook, with exercises and worksheets participants fill in, plus curated lists of organisations, websites and books to explore after the program. It needed to feel like part of the same family while working harder as a practical tool. We approached it as publication design, with clear navigation, consistent page types and room to write.

Deloitte resource guide spread introducing the Career Guidance Sequence: Vision, Strategy and Tactics
The guide opens by laying out the three phases of the Career Guidance Sequence.

02 — Structure

Three phases, three colours

The program teaches a three-step Career Guidance Sequence: Vision (the career themes that define long-term success), Strategy (an action plan with at least three alternate paths to a five-year goal) and Tactics (the skills and collateral needed to carry it out). We made that sequence the backbone of the guide.

Each phase has its own colour, icon and photograph. Vision is green with a pair of glasses, Strategy is teal with a chess piece, and Tactics is blue with a wrench. The opening spread shows all three as a vertical timeline, and each later section repeats its icon and colour in a framed introduction panel, so a reader always knows where they are.

Facing each introduction is a Resources page, headed by a ribbon in the matching colour. Organisations such as Hire Heroes USA, Bunker Labs and Military OneSource are listed with a short description and web address, and books like The First 90 Days get a book icon instead of a screen icon. Callouts, like the green "Don't censor your vision!" panel with a short example, add encouragement without breaking the structure.

03 — Worksheets

Room to write, not just read

The worksheets turn the strategy phase into numbered steps: My 5-Year Career Goal, Alternate Paths, and How will you pursue each path? Each has prompting questions at the top and generous ruled or tinted space below, framed with the same teal border so they feel like part of the book rather than an insert. Because the guide is designed for print, the answer areas use ruled lines and tinted boxes made for a pen.

The guide closes with a page of further resources and a simple full page: a green heart icon and the words "Thank you for your service."

Together with the LinkedIn booklet, it gives participants one set of materials to take away from the program. We later worked with another Deloitte team on training materials for Deloitte DFX.
