South 49
Five apprenticeship training manuals for South 49 Construction, each a training standard and log book in one, totalling well over 1,000 pages of clear, on-brand layout.

01 — Context
Training manual design for skilled trades
South 49 Construction is an industrial contractor and project management company that trains apprentices in skilled trades. It needed training manuals for its apprenticeship programs, documents that apprentices, trainers and sponsors would all rely on over the course of a program. Content like this is dense and procedural, and a poorly organized manual quickly becomes one nobody opens. The design had to make long requirements feel manageable and make the next step obvious for every reader.
We took on the training manual design for five trades: Pipefitter, Ironworker (Structural & Ornamental), Instrumentation & Control Technician, Millwright and Welder. Each manual does double duty as an Apprenticeship Training Standard and a Log Book, so it explains what has to be learned and records proof that it was. The set was designed to coordinate with other documentation we had already created for South 49, which made this a natural extension of our publication design work for the company.
02 — Usability
Built to be filled in, signed off and carried on site
A log book is a working document. It gets opened on job sites, written in by hand and signed by different people at different times. That shaped every layout decision.
Guidance pages, such as Training the Apprentice, use clear section headings in green capitals, italic subheads for roles like Trainer and Tips for Trainers, and arrow bullets that are easy to scan. The Competency Analysis Profile pages turn each skill set, from safe working practices to occupational skills, into a grid of tasks with space for sign-off, so a trainer can see at a glance what has been demonstrated and what remains.
Appendices hold the paperwork that closes out a program. The Apprentice Completion Form gathers apprentice, sponsor and program information in labelled fields with tick boxes, and a second page lists every skill set for final signatures. Generous field heights and consistent table styles mean the forms work as well with a pen as on screen.

03 — System
A consistent template for well over 1,000 pages
With well over 1,000 pages across five books, consistency was the real design challenge. We built one master system and applied it to every trade. Covers share a dark green field with a tinted construction photograph, the year set large in a white bar, the line Apprenticeship · Training Standard · Log Book and the South 49 Construction logo on a clean white base. Only the trade name and photo change, so the series reads as a set on a shelf while each book is easy to tell apart.
Inside, the same grid, heading styles, table formats and running footers repeat throughout. That keeps the print production predictable and makes future updates straightforward. It is the kind of long-document work we also brought to the Deloitte Resource Guide, and it matters for any company in construction and engineering that runs training programs of its own.
