01 — Context

A retirement seminar deck with a lot to say

Fortified Retirement, based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, helps people plan for income in retirement. The team had a large amount of content they wanted to share with potential clients: research, risk concepts, hypothetical examples and the strategies they recommend. What they had were rough ideas. What they needed was financial presentation design that could hold an audience from the first slide to the last.

The audience is people approaching or already in retirement, sitting in a room listening to an agent. They are not financial analysts. Every slide had to make one idea clear quickly, and the deck as a whole had to feel trustworthy without feeling like a spreadsheet.

That meant making choices about structure before style. We grouped the content into clear sections, gave each one a single job, and cut text on the slide down to the words the presenter actually needs the room to see. Everything else could live in the agent's talking points.

We took the client's material and turned it into a polished, animated presentation design that agents can deliver with confidence.

02 — Visual story

Climbing the Retirement Mountain

A long financial presentation needs a thread that people can follow. We found it in one of the client's own lines: "After climbing the Retirement Mountain, you should enjoy the view." That became the visual world of the whole deck.

We built a low-poly illustration style in deep ocean blue with crisp white and teal facets. A dotted red path climbs a mountain to a flag at the summit. Paper boats, floating clouds and a red hot air balloon appear throughout, and a castle silhouette ties back to the Fortified Retirement logo. The closing slide brings every element together, so the audience ends the session at the top of the climb.

Bold red accents echo the logo and pull the eye to icons, quotes and key questions. The title slide uses a blue-tinted photo of retirees laughing together, which sets a warm, human tone before the numbers arrive.

The illustration style also solved a practical problem. Stock photography of smiling couples on beaches is everywhere in financial services and quickly blurs together. A consistent, custom-feeling world of mountains, boats and balloons gives Fortified Retirement a presentation people will remember after they leave the room.

03 — Data

Making retirement risk easy to read

The heart of the presentation explains the risks retirees face: longevity, withdrawal rate risk and sequence of returns risk. Each topic gets its own colour and icon in a footer bar, so the audience always knows which section they are in.

We treated the numbers as infographics rather than text. Research figures from the Transamerica Center sit inside large dashed circles under the heading Reality vs. Expectations. The saving stages, from accumulation to preservation to the retirement "red zone," become a simple colour-coded timeline.

The most complex idea is sequence of returns risk. We charted a hypothetical example where two people each start with $1 million and the same average returns, but the order of good and bad years changes how long the money lasts. Two lines, two colours and a labelled gap make the point faster than a paragraph could. A profile slide for a fictional retiree, John Q., gives the example a face.

04 — Built to present

A financial presentation agents can deliver anywhere

Fortified Retirement's deck is presented by agents, so we designed it to work in their hands. The title slide has space for each agent's name and centre, and compliance details like licence information and "hypothetical example" disclaimers have a consistent, quiet home at the foot of each slide.

Animation was built in to pace the story: points arrive one at a time, so the presenter controls the conversation and the room isn't reading ahead. Slides like Finding Your Retirement Number pose questions to the audience, turning a lecture into a discussion.

Clear, repeatable layouts also make the deck easy to update as content changes. It is the same approach we bring to other finance and insurance clients, including the investor reporting template we designed for ILA Capital. If you are planning your own deck, our thoughts on designing for your audience are a good place to start.
